sir,

I have eto. to acknowledge the

receipt of your despatch No. 253 of

the 13th of June and to transmit to

you a copy of a letter which has been

sent to the Crown Agents with regard

to the pensions payable to Mr.

E.A. Irving, late Director of

Education, Hong Kong.

2.

I have not adopted the

suggestion for deferring the date

of Mr. Irving's retirement, which

you put forward in the penultimate

paragraph of your despatch,

especially since I am advised that

it would result in only a trifling

increase to the widows prospective

pension.

I have atc.

(for the Secretary of State)

(Signed) HENRY LAMELKT
